Listen to me baby
Hear me when I say
Bad luck and trouble
Aren’t here to stay
Good times are coming
They’re right on down the line
Dark skies will clear
And the sun will shine
It’s cold and grey and rainy
Spring seems far away
Often hard to bear, I know
But warm will come someday
Fields will fill with plenty
And the fish will tug my line
Dark skies will clear
And the sun will shine
Don’t you worry honey
Baby please don’t cry
It’s all gonna get better
In the by and by
Everything
Is going to be fine
Dark skies will clear
And the sun will shine

Donna and I were on the road from Antwerpen, Belgium the day before a one month tour of the former East Germany and Bavaria with two new agents when we stopped over to see our friend Horst. He claimed he was the funniest German comedian (which I already thought was one of his best jokes). All his friends called him “Pony” because he really wasn’t like a full-grown Horse (Horst). After the visit, we left in our Mercedes 508 a five-ton truck converted into a stylin’ camping car, but at the end of the small street, we could only turn right. We needed to go left to get back to the highway. As we turned right, the junction of two roads looked certainly big enough to make a U-turn in. I looked to see if it was clear, began to turn left to make the U-turn, and… BAM! A street train had come up out of a tunnel and hit the front driver’s side corner! I had just pulled my arm in or it could have been gone! I watched through my window as the train passed by and the passengers looked at us in shock. The front window glass shattered into a million pieces and everything went into s l o w – m o t i o n. Donna’s voice was slowed down like when a record is at the wrong speed as she said, “O u r l i f e is o v e r a s w e k n o w i t ! ” It was a terrible moment. The van, our home, transportation, and sleeping arrangements for the tour were destroyed! The train people had us sign a waiver that it wasn’t their fault. A nice motorcycle policeman helped us find a place to put the van. Pony, amazingly, loaned us his car for 10 days of the tour, and I wrote this song to convince Donna that everything was going to be alright, that indeed, the Sun Will Shine.
There are at least two versions of this song, one acoustic with Donna, and one in a swingin’ jazzy blues version. I like them both… of course!
