I Know Every Train

Posted on February 3, 2022March 6, 2022

****************************************************

I know every train

that passes this way

Where they’re goin’

how long the delays

Where to run

and where to hide

so the bulls don’t catch me

when I catch a ride, yeah.

I’ve got a little shack,

off that cold steel track

A place to sleep

an’ a fire out the back

I can hide it

so you can’t see a thing

an’ it keeps me dry

and out of the rain

I like to go fishin’

and play my guitar

Drink my whiskey

from a Mason jar

Ain’t no place

I would rather be

It seems to be a

pretty good life to me

If you see Wallace

tell him I’m doin’ fine

Just a little up

on that L&N line

Summer’s over, Lord,

Lord it’s gettin’ late

Believe it’s time for me

to hop another freight

I know every train

that passes this way

Where they’re goin’

how long the delays

Where to run

and where to hide

so the bulls don’t catch me

when I catch a ride, yeah.

The lap steel on this was the first part that I wrote. It just had a train feeling to me with the rhythm of the tracks, clackity clack. I, admittedly, have only ridden a short distance by rail but I have known a few actual hobos and rail riders. The words are a culmination of stories told to me and a bit of my own imagination.
