What Did I Forget

Posted on January 10, 2023January 31, 2023

When I walked into this room

I had something on my mind

I was looking for something or other

What was I supposed to find?

Standing here in confusion

The thought had just disappeared

Maybe it will come back

if I return to where I was

before I came into here

So I turned around

And walked through the door

Back to the room

that I had been in before

Why did I walk into this room

What was I supposed to find?

It seems there was a purpose

But now it’s slipped my mind

If I go back to where I started

It might occur to me

Of why I came in here the first place

And jog that memory

So I turned around

And walked through the door

Back to the room

that I had been in before

When I walked into this room

I had something on my mind

I was looking for something or other

What was I supposed to find?

Standing here in confusion

The thought had just disappeared

Maybe it will come back

if I return to where I was

before I came into here

Forgetting

You know that feeling when you walk into a room and forget why? You might stand there for a few minutes trying to remember why it was that you entered the room. Often we remember what it was when we return to the room where we had the original thought. One idea of why this happens comes from a team of researchers at the University of Notre Dame. The first part of their paper’s title sums it up: “Walking through doorways causes forgetting.” Others speculate that it’s because you ran into an alien that had to erase your memory so it could escape. Anyway, it happens to everyone at some time or another. In this song, the person gets stuck in a loop of forgetting what they forgot.
