One day Donna said to me, “There sure are a lot of blues songs where they say things like, ‘I got up soon in the morning’. That’s not too bad of a start on the day! Maybe you should write a song where you didn’t get up in the morning!” So, I thought, why couldn’t he get up? Maybe because he was dead! Now that wouldn’t be a good start of the day for anyone. So, I set about writing what a dead man might be thinking about the situation.
