We were living in a small town. This town had a little community orchestra with violins, horns, electric guitars, bass, and all kinds of fun things. They had just built a new community center, very nice. The man that helped build it was a friend of ours and so just before the big community concert he invited us to go in and take a look at the place. He wanted to show somebody else the backstage area. It went large and went very deep. He kept hearing weird noises back there. It was a mystery to all.
When we went into the hall, there was a lady that was upset. She was the orchestra’s Director. She was saying we need to leave but I said we had permission from the builder to come take a quick look and she said OK and stormed off saying, “I can’t get anything done around here!” So, we took a look around and it was beautiful. Lots of wood. The place was just lovely and the orchestra was set up and getting prepared to play.
The violin section had three different strange amplifiers or rather video screens that they were running their violins through and they could control effects or whatever they wanted. It was really interesting. There was a young man with an SG guitar and he was playing kind of country licks through it. I said, “I used to have one just like that, but it was stolen.” Another fellow played a guitar without any tuners on the top, kind of the like a Steinberger guitar. He was playing some rock ‘n’ roll.
I went backstage to another area was talking to somebody, I can’t really remember what about, but when I came back out and looked to my left and there’s a man that looks just as redneck as could be with his eight or so teeth, greasy black hair combed straight down around his head, about a three day stubble, wearing a dirty, white tank top and blue jeans. He was really very nice and he had some of the strangest instruments I have never seen, and a lap steel. The bottom instrument had three strings and I’m not sure how it worked, I couldn’t see a way to pluck the strings. The top instrument, I’m not sure what it was. I’m not even sure how to describe it! I’ll try, I think it was like a a wooden maze with a marble and the marble would roll through areas and ding things, or trigger buttons. He was using it to make music somehow but he didn’t play it while I was there. He had connected all of this together and running through a jumble of wires and homemade amps and speakers. The had made up a small pool with a drain in the floor in front of him and he had some device it that whenever he pushed the button on the floor it would dump water it would mechanically lift up a small container of water and splash it into a small reservoir that powered his Wahwah pedal or maybe it wasn’t a Wawa but maybe it was something else I never could find out what it did exactly but he said, yes, they made it special for him by his specifications.
