Clarence woke up long before sunrise
He pulled on some pants and downstairs made his way
He opened the cupboard, got his favorite cereal
Poured some in a bowl and added some milk
Just like he did almost every day
He didn’t realize that today was much different
He had no idea what was waiting for him
Today was the day not like any other
Today was the day that it all changed for him
Down to the bathroom and got out his toothbrush
Brushing his teeth like each day before
Put on a clean shirt and combed his hair
made a sandwich that he placed in his lunch box
Then he saw he was late and he rushed out the door
(Chorus)
He just made the bus and he’d go to the city
Riding along there with everyone else
All checking their phones for the news of the day
He saw the people never looked at each other
That’s when he began to think to himself
He suddenly realized that today was no different
He had an idea what was waiting for him
Today was the day just like any other
Today was the day that it all changed for him
Today was the day he could no longer take it
Today was the day that this all had to change
So he stepped off the bus at an unknown location
And began his adventure, to jump start his brain.
CHANGES
He started to walk in an unknown direction
The birds in the sky seemed to show him the way
The more that he walked, the better he felt so
He just kept on walking past the streets of the city
It’s said he’s still out there walking today!
The clouds in the sky
and the grass in the fields
the sweet songs of the birds
Felt much more real
than the everyday action
of robotic motions
a life that was programed
so no-one c ould feel
the pleasures and pains
of life outside the system
the blue of the sky
and the flowers of the field
No longer imprisoned
In a work-a-day world
get out and discover
the world that is real.

The music came first. I was playing around with a rhythmic construct that had been in my mind. To free it, I began to build it on the computer, adding and subtracting the parts to bring it to life. When I got pretty close to what I had in mind, I let it just sit, listening to it over and over until it began to tell me it needed words. But what was the story? I gave it a title and then it just unfolded as one phrase followed another. Clarence was free at last!
